French 20-year follow-up after shoulder instability surgery

Prospective Follow-up Study of Patients Undergoing Shoulder Instability Surgery

Observational Chirurgie Du Sport · NCT07405827

This 20-year follow-up will track people who had surgery for shoulder instability to see if their repairs last, how well they return to sport, and what long-term problems occur.

What this trial studies

This observational cohort follows patients who underwent surgical treatment for shoulder instability, including Bankart repair and Latarjet procedures, with standardized data collection over 20 years. The study records recurrence of instability, return-to-sport rates and levels, validated shoulder function scores, and procedure-related complications. Participants are drawn from patients treated at Chirurgie du Sport in Paris and attend periodic follow-up visits with consistent outcome measures. The long-term data aim to describe the durability of different surgical approaches and functional trajectories over two decades.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are patients who underwent surgical treatment for shoulder instability (Bankart repair or Latarjet) and can attend long-term follow-up visits in Paris.

Not a fit: Patients who did not have surgery for instability, those treated elsewhere who cannot return for follow-up, or those who decline participation are unlikely to benefit directly from this cohort.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, the findings could help surgeons and patients choose surgical approaches with better long-term stability and clearer expectations for return to sport and function.

How similar studies have performed: Shorter-term studies report reasonable outcomes for Bankart and Latarjet procedures, but comparable 20-year cohort data are limited, so this long-term follow-up is relatively novel.
