Frailty in kidney transplant recipients and its link to chronic graft dysfunction

Study of Frailty Among Renal Transplant Recipients, Its Relation to Chronic Renal Allograft Dysfunction

NA · Alexandria University · NCT07181096

What this trial studies

This protocol enrolls kidney transplant recipients at Alexandria University with estimated GFR >30 and applies standardized frailty assessments alongside routine clinical and laboratory data to determine prevalence. Investigators will compare frailty status with measures of chronic allograft dysfunction, including trends in GFR and relevant clinical history. The study records comorbidities such as diabetes and serum albumin and notes cognitive impairment and sarcopenia where present. Patients with active cancer, chronic liver disease, prior immunological disease, severe psychiatric illness, lower-limb amputation, pregnancy, or who are otherwise unable to participate are excluded.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are adult kidney transplant recipients treated at Alexandria University with GFR >30 who are physically and mentally able to complete frailty assessments and do not meet exclusion criteria.

Not a fit: Patients who are pregnant, have active neoplasia, chronic liver disease, prior immunological disease, severe psychiatric disorder, lower-limb amputation, or a GFR ≤30 are excluded and unlikely to receive benefit from this protocol.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, the findings could help identify transplant patients at higher risk of chronic graft problems so clinicians can target monitoring or supportive care.

How similar studies have performed: Previous studies in CKD and dialysis populations have consistently linked frailty to worse outcomes, and smaller transplant cohorts have suggested similar associations though larger confirmatory transplant-specific studies are limited.
