What this trial studies

This prospective case-control project groups patients by type of arthroplasty (hip or knee) and by frailty status using the Primary Care Frailty Index from medical records. Frailty will be reassessed at rehabilitation admission (T0) and discharge (T1), with additional outcome data collected at 3 months (T2) and 1 year (T3). Outcomes cover body structure and function, activity level, patient satisfaction, and adverse events, with a focus on whether rehabilitation has a protective role for frail patients. The study is conducted at a single rehabilitation center and includes only elective primary arthroplasty patients who enter rehabilitation within 10 days of surgery.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Adults who received elective primary hip or knee replacement, can understand instructions, gave consent, and are admitted to the rehabilitation ward within 10 days after surgery are ideal candidates.

Not a fit: Patients undergoing revision or non-elective arthroplasty, those enrolled in other studies, or those admitted to rehab more than 10 days after surgery are not eligible and are unlikely to benefit from this protocol.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, the findings could help tailor rehabilitation plans to reduce complications and improve recovery for frail patients after hip or knee replacement.

How similar studies have performed: Previous research shows frailty predicts higher complication and worse outcomes after joint replacement, but the specific protective effect of rehabilitation in frail patients has been little tested.
