Forest sounds in virtual reality during chest tube removal
The Effect of Nature Sounds in a Virtual Reality Forest During Chest Tube Removal on Pain, Vital Signs, Comfort, and Patient Satisfaction
This test checks whether listening to forest sounds while wearing a virtual reality headset helps adults feel less pain and more comfortable during chest tube removal.

What this trial studies
Adults scheduled for chest tube removal in a thoracic surgery ward are randomized to either a virtual reality headset showing a relaxing forest with nature sounds during the procedure or to usual care in a pretest-posttest randomized controlled design. Pain (0-10 visual analog scale), comfort (0-10), and patient satisfaction (0-10) are measured, and vital signs (blood pressure, heart rate, respiratory rate, oxygen saturation) are recorded before and after removal. Inclusion requires Turkish language ability and intact hearing and vision, while patients with impaired orientation, migraine, vertigo, dizziness, or illiteracy are excluded. The study compares changes in these outcomes between groups to see if the VR audio-visual intervention reduces pain and improves comfort and satisfaction.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Adults (18+) who speak and understand Turkish, are scheduled for chest tube removal, and have no hearing or vision impairments are ideal candidates.
Not a fit: Patients with migraine, vertigo, dizziness, impaired orientation, or sensory impairments (or those who cannot use VR) may not benefit or may be excluded.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this could offer a low-risk, non-drug way to reduce pain and improve comfort and satisfaction during chest tube removal.
How similar studies have performed: Previous small studies using virtual reality or nature sounds for painful procedures have shown modest reductions in pain and anxiety, but evidence specific to chest tube removal is limited.
