What this trial studies
This study evaluates the effectiveness of a family model diabetes self-management education and support program delivered in faith-based organizations in the Republic of the Marshall Islands. It involves a cluster-randomized controlled trial with a wait-list control group, targeting individuals with type 2 diabetes and their family members. The program is facilitated by trained community health workers and aims to improve diabetes management among participants. The study will include up to 288 participants with type 2 diabetes and their family members, focusing on culturally relevant education and support.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are self-reported Marshallese individuals aged 18 and older who have type 2 diabetes and at least one family member willing to participate.
Not a fit: Patients who have received diabetes self-management education in the past five years or have conditions that hinder their ability to follow the protocol may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this program could significantly improve diabetes management and health outcomes for individuals and families affected by type 2 diabetes in the Marshall Islands.
How similar studies have performed: While there is limited information on similar studies specifically in the Marshall Islands, family-based interventions for diabetes management have shown promise in other populations.
