What this trial studies

This observational study will enroll patients aged 65 and older who are scheduled for ERCP at participating hospitals in Xi'an, China and collect clinical, procedural, and aging-related data. Investigators will record postoperative adverse events (such as pancreatitis, bleeding, and perforation), length of stay, comorbidities, frailty, functional reserve, and cognitive and psychological measures. The goal is to identify which factors predict prolonged hospitalization after ERCP while reducing selection bias seen in prior retrospective work. Findings will be used to inform risk stratification and peri-procedural care for older adults undergoing ERCP.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: People aged 65 or older who are scheduled to undergo ERCP, can give informed consent, and do not have severe cognitive or hearing impairment, hemodynamic instability, or suspected gastrointestinal perforation.

Not a fit: People younger than 65, those unable to provide consent, pregnant or lactating women, and patients with severe cognitive or hearing deficits, hemodynamic instability, or known/suspected GI perforation are not expected to benefit from participating.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, the results could help doctors identify older patients at higher risk for ERCP complications and prolonged stays so care can be tailored to reduce complications and shorten hospitalizations.

How similar studies have performed: Previous retrospective studies have suggested older age is linked to more ERCP complications and longer hospital stays, but comprehensive analyses that include frailty and cognitive measures are limited.
