Exploring the role of vitamin D and macrophages in lung disease

D Vitamin and Alveolar Macrophages in Idiopathic Pulmonal Fibrosis

Observational University of Aarhus · NCT06909409

This study is trying to see if low vitamin D levels affect certain immune cells in the lungs of people with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis and if this could lead to new treatment options.

What this trial studies

This observational study aims to investigate the relationship between vitamin D levels and the behavior of alveolar macrophages in patients with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF). Researchers will assess whether IPF patients exhibit insufficient vitamin D levels and whether their pulmonary macrophages are pro-fibrotic and pro-inflammatory. The study will involve clinical evaluations and blood tests to gather data on these factors. By understanding these interactions, the study hopes to shed light on potential therapeutic targets for IPF.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are individuals diagnosed with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis, non-IPF interstitial lung disease, or lung cancer who can provide informed consent.

Not a fit: Patients who do not speak or understand Danish may not benefit from this study due to language barriers.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to new insights that improve treatment strategies for patients with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis.

How similar studies have performed: While the interplay between vitamin D and macrophages in lung diseases is an emerging area of interest, this specific observational approach is relatively novel and has not been extensively tested in prior studies.
