What this trial studies

This observational study aims to investigate the relationship between the difficulty of colonoscopy procedures and patients' personality traits, specifically focusing on the Big Five personality dimensions. Participants will undergo routine colonoscopy while also completing assessments for anxiety and depression using the GAD-7 and PHQ-9 scales. The study seeks to determine if certain personality characteristics can predict the likelihood of experiencing a difficult colonoscopy, defined by longer insertion times and higher pain scores. By understanding these correlations, the study hopes to improve patient management during colonoscopy procedures.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are adults aged 18-75 who are undergoing their first colonoscopy at Peking Union Medical College Hospital.

Not a fit: Patients with severe mental disorders, previous colonoscopy experience, or specific gastrointestinal conditions may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to better patient preparation and management strategies for colonoscopy, potentially reducing discomfort and anxiety.

How similar studies have performed: While there is limited research specifically linking personality traits to colonoscopy difficulty, studies have shown that psychological factors can influence medical procedures, suggesting potential for success in this novel approach.
