Exploring how natural elements in gyms affect exercise enjoyment and performance
Examining the Influence of Biophilic Design on College Students' Exercise Performance: A Crossover Study
This study tests if adding natural elements like plants and sunlight in gyms can make workouts more enjoyable and improve performance for male college students aged 18-25.

What this trial studies
This observational study investigates the impact of biophilic design—incorporating natural elements like plants and sunlight—on exercise performance and enjoyment in male college students aged 18-25. Participants will complete treadmill fitness tests in both biophilic and standard gym environments to assess differences in maximal aerobic capacity and perceived effort. Surveys will be administered post-exercise to evaluate mood and enjoyment levels in each setting. The study aims to determine if enhancing indoor exercise spaces with natural elements can lead to better physical and mental outcomes.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are healthy male college students aged 18-25 who regularly engage in exercise.
Not a fit: Patients with significant health issues, high blood pressure, or those unable to exercise at moderate to vigorous intensities may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved gym designs that enhance exercise enjoyment and performance for individuals.
How similar studies have performed: While the concept of biophilic design is gaining traction, this specific approach comparing exercise environments is relatively novel and has not been extensively tested.
