What this trial studies

This observational study aims to investigate the relationship between gut microbiota and treatment responses in patients with pelvic cancers, including bladder, prostate, cervical, ovarian, womb, and colorectal cancers. Patients will provide fecal samples prior to their treatment, allowing researchers to analyze the gut bacteria profiles and their potential influence on radiotherapy and chemotherapy outcomes. The study is conducted at the University of Aberdeen and Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, leveraging their specialized microbiota laboratory and clinical facilities for comprehensive analysis.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are patients over 16 years old being treated for pelvic cancers at NHS Grampian who are willing to consent.

Not a fit: Patients with malignancies from other sources or anatomical locations will not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved treatment strategies for pelvic cancer patients by personalizing therapies based on gut microbiota profiles.

How similar studies have performed: While the exploration of gut microbiota in cancer treatment is a growing field, this specific approach focusing on pelvic cancers is relatively novel and has not been extensively tested.
