Exploring brain blood flow in obese patients

Hemodynamic and Functional Characteristics of the Cerebral Circulation in Obesity

Observational Instituto de Investigación Sanitaria de la Fundación Jiménez Díaz · NCT06067113

This study looks at how obesity affects blood flow in the brain and checks if losing weight after surgery changes that for people who are overweight.

What this trial studies

This observational study aims to investigate the differences in cerebral hemodynamics and vascular characteristics between obese individuals and those with normal weight. It will also assess changes in these characteristics following significant weight loss after bariatric surgery. The study utilizes supraaortic and transcranial duplex imaging techniques to gather data on brain arteries and blood flow velocity. By understanding these relationships, the research seeks to shed light on the impact of obesity on cerebral vascular health.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are morbidly obese individuals with a BMI over 40 or a BMI of 35 with obesity-related health conditions who are indicated for bariatric surgery.

Not a fit: Patients under 18 or over 59 years old, pregnant women, or those with acute heart disease may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could enhance understanding of how obesity affects brain blood flow, potentially leading to improved treatment strategies for related vascular conditions.

How similar studies have performed: While there is substantial research on obesity's impact on large-vessel atherosclerosis, studies specifically focusing on cerebral vasculature in obese patients are limited, making this approach relatively novel.
