What this trial studies
This pilot randomized controlled trial aims to evaluate the feasibility and acceptability of an exercise-based cardiac rehabilitation program for patients with atrial fibrillation who are on a waiting list for catheter ablation. Participants will be referred to a supervised exercise program led by a clinical exercise physiologist, which includes psychoeducation sessions. The study will assess recruitment rates, adherence to the program, and patient outcomes such as exercise capacity and quality of life through various measures and interviews. The trial will involve 60 patients at a single NHS research site.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are adults aged 18 and older diagnosed with atrial fibrillation who are on a waiting list for catheter ablation.
Not a fit: Patients with severe cardiovascular conditions or disabilities that prevent exercise may not benefit from this program.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this program could improve the health and quality of life for patients with atrial fibrillation awaiting treatment.
How similar studies have performed: Other studies have shown positive outcomes with exercise-based interventions for cardiac rehabilitation, suggesting potential success for this approach.
