Examining the relationship between oral and intestinal bacteria in patients with a specific gum disease

Characterization of Peroodontal and Intestinal Microbiota in Patients With Gingival Scarring Pemphigoid: a Matched Controlled Study

Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Nice · NCT06291350

What this trial studies

This observational study investigates the periodontal and intestinal microbiota in patients diagnosed with Mucous Membrane Pemphigoid (MMPg) who also experience desquamative gingivitis. The research aims to understand how the dysbiotic oral microbiota may worsen gingival damage and whether the autoimmune process in MMPg affects the virulence of periodontal pathogens. Participants will undergo plaque sampling, stool collection, and periodontal examinations to assess their conditions and microbiota profiles. The study includes adults over 18 years, focusing on those with varying degrees of periodontal health and MMPg.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates include adults over 18 with MMPg and associated periodontal issues, as well as matched controls with periodontitis or healthy periodontal conditions.

Not a fit: Patients currently undergoing antibiotic therapy or mechanical periodontal treatment, or those with other chronic immune or digestive illnesses may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved understanding and management of periodontal disease in patients with autoimmune conditions.

How similar studies have performed: While the relationship between oral and intestinal microbiota has been explored, this specific approach in the context of MMPg is relatively novel and not extensively tested.
