Examining the link between urine proteins and urinary symptoms in men with prostate enlargement

The Association of Urinary BDNF and NGF With Lower Urinary System Parameters in Patients With Bladder Outlet Obstruction Secondary to Benign Prostate Hyperplasia

NA · Marmara University · NCT06265519

What this trial studies

This study investigates the relationship between urine levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and nerve growth factor (NGF) with lower urinary system parameters in men suffering from benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and associated bladder outlet obstruction. It aims to understand how these proteins correlate with symptoms such as increased urination frequency and difficulty in urination. The intervention involves holmium laser enucleation of the prostate to alleviate symptoms and assess changes in urinary parameters post-procedure. The study focuses on older men, as BPH is a prevalent condition in this demographic.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are men aged 50-80 with bladder outlet obstruction due to benign prostatic hyperplasia.

Not a fit: Patients with known neurological diseases, diabetes, urinary tract infections, or those who have had previous prostate surgery will not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved understanding and management of urinary symptoms in men with BPH.

How similar studies have performed: While studies have explored urinary biomarkers in relation to BPH, this specific approach focusing on BDNF and NGF in conjunction with surgical intervention is relatively novel.
