Examining the link between pesticide exposure and Parkinson's disease

Prevalence of Preclinical and Prodromal Parkinson´s Disease in Subjects Exposed to Pesticides

Observational Hospital Universitario de Burgos · NCT06420310

This study is trying to see if people who have been exposed to pesticides, like farmers, are more likely to develop Parkinson's disease compared to those who haven't been exposed.

What this trial studies

This observational study aims to investigate whether individuals exposed to pesticides have a higher risk of developing Parkinson's disease (PD). It will involve a cross-sectional prevalence analysis comparing 130 farmers exposed to pesticides with 130 controls who have no pesticide exposure. Researchers will assess pesticide exposure through questionnaires and evaluate the presence of preclinical and prodromal PD using biological biomarkers and clinical signs. The study will also employ multivariate analyses to adjust for various clinical factors, enhancing our understanding of the neurodegenerative mechanisms linked to pesticide exposure.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates include farmers who have been exposed to pesticides and individuals without any work-related pesticide exposure for the control group.

Not a fit: Patients with significant neurological conditions or those who cannot provide signed consent will not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could provide insights into the early mechanisms of Parkinson's disease, potentially leading to preventive strategies for at-risk populations.

How similar studies have performed: While there have been studies examining pesticide exposure and neurological conditions, this specific approach focusing on early PD mechanisms is relatively novel.
