What this trial studies
This case-control study aims to investigate the relationship between severe and profound hearing loss and mild cognitive impairment in middle-aged adults aged 45 to 64 years. It will include 180 participants, with 90 individuals experiencing hearing loss and 90 healthy controls matched by age, sex, and education level. Cognitive function will be assessed using a battery of five tests, alongside evaluations of depression and dependence. The study will take place at the Cochlear Implant Center at Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates include middle-aged adults aged 45 to 64 years with severe to profound bilateral post-lingual sensorineural hearing loss.
Not a fit: Patients with associated disabilities that prevent test performance or those with a history of neurological or psychiatric disorders may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could enhance understanding of cognitive health in individuals with hearing loss, potentially leading to improved interventions and support for this population.
How similar studies have performed: While studies have shown cognitive impairment in older adults with hearing loss, this specific focus on middle-aged adults is novel and has not been extensively tested.
