Examining the effects of stopping exercise on blood sugar and blood vessel health in older adults
The Impact of Removal of Exercise on Glycemic Control and Vascular Health in Older Active
This study is testing how taking a break from exercise affects blood sugar and blood vessel health in older adults who usually stay active, and whether getting back to exercise can help fix any problems that arise.

What this trial studies
This study investigates how temporarily stopping exercise affects glycemic control and endothelial function in older adults who are physically active. It aims to determine the speed at which these impairments occur after an acute period of inactivity and whether a return to exercise over three days can restore these functions. The focus is on understanding the relationship between physical activity and cardiovascular health in an aging population, which is less understood compared to younger individuals. Participants will undergo a controlled removal of exercise to assess these changes.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are healthy, physically active adults aged 55 years and older who engage in at least 90 minutes of physical activity per week.
Not a fit: Patients with significant health issues such as HIV, hepatitis, or tuberculosis, or those who have recently changed their body weight or smoke, may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could provide insights into how to maintain vascular health and glycemic control in older adults, potentially reducing the risk of diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
How similar studies have performed: While studies have shown the effects of inactivity on younger populations, this approach focusing on older adults is relatively novel and less explored.
