Examining the effects of lung collapse on heart pressure after heart transplantation in children

Impact of Atelectasis and Lung Recruitment on RVEDP Measurement in Children Undergoing Cardiac Catheterization for Surveillance Following Orthotropic Heart Transplantation

What this trial studies

This observational study investigates the impact of atelectasis, or lung tissue collapse, on intracardiac pressures in children who have undergone orthotropic heart transplantation. Following the transplant, these patients typically undergo routine cardiac catheterizations under general anesthesia, which can lead to atelectasis. The study aims to determine how this condition affects pressure measurements critical for monitoring potential rejection of the transplanted heart. By understanding this relationship, the study seeks to improve post-transplant care and treatment regimens.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates include children who have undergone orthotropic heart transplantation and require routine cardiac catheterization under general anesthesia.

Not a fit: Patients who may not benefit include those with known acute rejection, significant pulmonary issues, or those who have had previous lung surgeries.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could enhance monitoring techniques and treatment strategies for children post-heart transplantation, potentially improving patient outcomes.

How similar studies have performed: While the specific impact of atelectasis on intracardiac pressures post-heart transplantation is not widely studied, related research on anesthesia effects in pediatric populations suggests potential for meaningful insights.
