Examining the effect of Ascaris lumbricoides on lung infections in COPD patients
Role of A. Lumbricoides in the Development of Pulmonary Aspergillosis in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Patients

What this trial studies
This study aims to determine the prevalence of Ascaris lumbricoides infection in patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), both with and without concurrent pulmonary aspergillosis, as well as in healthy controls. It will assess how the presence of ascariasis influences the development of pulmonary aspergillosis in COPD patients by analyzing the cytokine profiles of these individuals. The study will involve measuring levels of specific cytokines such as Interleukin-1B, Interleukin-4, Interleukin-6, tumor necrosis factor-alpha, and interferon-gamma in the participants.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study include COPD patients, those with pulmonary aspergillosis, those with ascariasis, and healthy individuals for comparison.
Not a fit: Patients with COPD who have other autoimmune diseases, oncological diseases, or other co-infections may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved understanding and management of lung infections in COPD patients, potentially enhancing treatment strategies.
How similar studies have performed: While the specific approach of this study may be novel, similar studies have explored the relationship between helminth infections and respiratory conditions, showing varying degrees of success.
