Examining sleep quality in patients after heart bypass surgery
Sleep Quality and Sleep-disordered Breathing in Bypass Surgery Patients
Turku University Hospital · NCT06453538

What this trial studies
This observational study investigates the relationship between sleep quality and sleep-disordered breathing in patients undergoing elective coronary artery bypass surgery (CABG). Patients will undergo a sleep polygraph before and six months after surgery, along with transthoracic echocardiograms and blood tests. The study aims to identify potential causes of sleep apnea and its impact on postoperative recovery, particularly focusing on microemboli and thoracic tissue trauma. By establishing a link between sleep quality and surgical outcomes, the findings could inform clinical practices for better patient care.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are patients scheduled for elective coronary artery bypass surgery without prior nighttime CPAP treatment or other heart surgeries.
Not a fit: Patients undergoing emergency CABG or those with existing sleep apnea treated with CPAP may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved management of sleep disorders in patients undergoing heart bypass surgery, enhancing recovery and overall health outcomes.
How similar studies have performed: While the specific approach of this study is novel, previous studies have indicated a correlation between sleep disorders and cardiovascular surgeries, suggesting potential for meaningful insights.
