Examining postoperative memories and sedation levels during tracheal intubation

Postoperative Memories and Optimal Level of Sedation for Tracheal Intubation Using Fiberoptic Bronchoscopy/Vidolaryngoscopy in Patients With Anticipated Difficult Airway Undergoing Surgery

Hospital Universitari Vall d'Hebron Research Institute · NCT06514690

What this trial studies

This observational study aims to assess postoperative memories in patients undergoing tracheal intubation with either a fiberoptic bronchoscope or video laryngoscope while under sedation. It will include 100 patients over 18 years old who are expected to have a difficult airway during surgery. The study will evaluate the levels of sedation achieved during the procedure and their correlation with the presence of postoperative memories. Patients will be questioned about their experiences 24 hours after extubation to gather data on their memories and sedation levels.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are adults over 18 years old who are scheduled for surgery and have a predicted difficult airway.

Not a fit: Patients under 18 years of age or those with cognitive impairments may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could improve patient comfort and reduce unpleasant memories associated with tracheal intubation in difficult airway cases.

How similar studies have performed: While similar studies have explored sedation and patient experiences during intubation, this specific approach comparing two techniques in a difficult airway context is relatively novel.
