Examining Olfactory Cleft Stenosis in Patients Before Nose Surgery
Olfactory Cleft Stenosis and Obstruction on Paranasal Sinus CT Scan in Pre Septo Rhinoplasty Patients Without Respiratory Mucosa Pathology : Normal Variants or Pathologic Findings ?
This study looks at adults who are having nose surgery to see if blockages in their nasal passages affect their sense of smell.

What this trial studies
This observational study analyzes patients over 18 years old who underwent septoplasty or septorhinoplasty between December 2013 and December 2021. It focuses on the relationship between olfactory cleft stenosis and obstruction as seen on paranasal sinus CT scans and olfactory function measured by the Sniffin Stick test. The study aims to classify the severity of olfactory cleft stenosis and obstruction and correlate these findings with olfactory impairment. Experienced radiologists will evaluate CT scans while remaining blinded to the olfactory test results.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are adults over 18 who are scheduled for septoplasty or septorhinoplasty without any respiratory mucosa pathology.
Not a fit: Patients with existing respiratory mucosa pathology or conditions that affect olfaction will not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could enhance understanding of olfactory impairment and improve surgical outcomes for patients undergoing nasal surgery.
How similar studies have performed: While similar studies have explored olfactory function and nasal surgery, this specific approach to correlating CT findings with olfactory impairment is relatively novel.
