What this trial studies
This observational study investigates the relationship between nursing acuity measures and staffing levels within somatic in-patient care. It employs both quantitative and qualitative analyses to assess nurses' perceptions of their work environment before, during, and after the implementation of a patient acuity tool. The aim is to understand how patient acuity, which reflects the severity of illness and nursing care needs, influences staffing decisions and overall job satisfaction among nurses. Data will be collected over a period of six months across five wards in Gävleborg County, Sweden.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are nurses employed in medical wards and first-line managers within the participating hospitals.
Not a fit: Travelling nurses and those with less than one month of employment will not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could enhance nurse staffing decisions, leading to improved patient care and job satisfaction for nurses.
How similar studies have performed: While there is limited research on direct nurse staffing decisions related to patient acuity, this approach aims to fill a gap in the existing literature.
