What this trial studies

This observational study aims to estimate the prevalence of intestinal parasitic infections (IPIs) among malnourished children under five years old in Sohag, Egypt. It involves collecting stool samples from 100 children exhibiting symptoms of malnutrition, such as growth retardation and lethargy. The samples will be analyzed both macroscopically and microscopically to identify any parasitic infections that may be contributing to their malnutrition. Additionally, anthropometric measurements will be taken to assess the nutritional status of the participants.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are children aged 6 months to 5 years who exhibit symptoms of malnutrition.

Not a fit: Patients who have received specific anthelmintic, antiprotozoal, purgatives, or anti-diarrheal medications within three weeks prior to stool sampling may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved understanding and management of malnutrition in children by addressing underlying parasitic infections.

How similar studies have performed: While similar studies have been conducted, this specific focus on the interplay between intestinal parasitic infections and malnutrition in young children is relatively novel.
