What this trial studies

This observational study aims to assess gender disparities in speech outcomes among patients who have undergone total laryngectomy and are using a tracheoesophageal prosthesis (TEP). The research will involve multiple institutions and will evaluate both subjective and objective measures of voice and speech quality. The hypothesis is that female patients will experience poorer outcomes compared to male patients. Various assessment scales will be utilized to capture a comprehensive view of the speech rehabilitation process and its impact on quality of life.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are both male and female patients who have completed total laryngectomy and are currently using a TEP.

Not a fit: Patients who have not undergone total laryngectomy or are not using a TEP will not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved speech rehabilitation strategies tailored to address gender-specific needs in laryngectomy patients.

How similar studies have performed: While there is limited research on gender disparities in laryngectomy outcomes, this study addresses a novel area that has not been extensively explored.
