What this trial studies

This observational study aims to conduct serial sonographic examinations of the gastric antrum in patients who have experienced relevant traumatic injuries. The investigators will perform point of care ultrasound (POCUS) every two hours until the patient undergoes operative treatment, with a maximum of five examinations. The study will also collect demographic and patient-related factors to identify correlations with delayed gastric emptying.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates include patients admitted to the emergency department with relevant traumatic injuries.

Not a fit: Patients with life-threatening injuries requiring immediate treatment, underage individuals, and pregnant women may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could improve anesthesia safety by providing better assessments of gastric emptying in trauma patients.

How similar studies have performed: While similar studies using point of care ultrasound for gastric assessment have shown promise, this specific approach in trauma patients is relatively novel.
