What this trial studies
This observational study aims to assess the prevalence of frailty and its association with postoperative neurocognitive disorders in geriatric patients aged 65 and older undergoing elective orthopedic surgery in Georgia. Participants will undergo a series of cognitive and frailty assessments before surgery and at multiple follow-up points postoperatively. The study will evaluate various cognitive functions, delirium, depression, and anxiety to understand the impact of frailty on postoperative outcomes. Data will be collected through interviews and standardized tests to provide insights into the cognitive health of this population.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are men and women aged 65 years and older scheduled for elective orthopedic surgery involving knee or hip endoprosthesis.
Not a fit: Patients with dementia, psychiatric diseases, or those who have had surgery in the past six months may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved preoperative assessments and interventions that enhance postoperative cognitive outcomes for elderly patients.
How similar studies have performed: Previous studies in high-income countries have shown a correlation between preoperative frailty and postoperative cognitive disorders, indicating that this approach has been validated in similar contexts.
