Evaluation of outcomes in children with urinary tract dilatation
Retrospective Evaluation of a Cohort of Patients Diagnosed With Pre- and Postnatal Urinary Dilatation: Outcome and Long-term Follow-up
This study looks at how children diagnosed with urinary tract dilatation before or after birth are doing over time to see if early detection helps prevent problems.

What this trial studies
This study conducts a retrospective evaluation of children diagnosed with urinary tract dilatation either before or after birth. It aims to assess the long-term outcomes and follow-up of these patients, focusing on the implications of early diagnosis through prenatal imaging. The study analyzes clinical data from pediatric patients referred to a medical center over a span of more than two decades, emphasizing the importance of monitoring urinary tract abnormalities to prevent complications. By documenting the progression of urinary dilatation, the study seeks to differentiate between significant and insignificant cases to reduce unnecessary interventions.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates include pediatric patients diagnosed with urinary tract dilatation through prenatal or postnatal ultrasound between 2000 and 2021.
Not a fit: Patients with incomplete clinical data or those with urinary dilatation associated with renal stones may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could help refine management strategies for urinary tract dilatation in children, reducing unnecessary treatments and parental anxiety.
How similar studies have performed: Other studies have shown success in evaluating outcomes of urinary tract dilatation, but this specific retrospective approach may provide novel insights.
Eligibility criteria
Show full inclusion / exclusion criteria
Inclusion Criteria: * Pediatric patients referred to one of the participating centers between January 1 2000 and August 31 2021 for either a prenatal or a postnatal diagnosis of urinary tract dilatation; * Urinary tract dilatation documented on at least one postnatal ultrasound, with related measurements; * Presence of at least one other ultrasound performed during follow-up in the postnatal period. Exclusion Criteria: * Lack of some of the clinical data considered crucial to the study, particularly incomplete ultrasound reports referable to at least two different ultrasounds performed in follow-up; * Dilatation with a picture of documented renal lithiasis.
