Evaluating the effect of NSAIDs on pleurodesis quality after surgery for pneumothorax

Does Non-Steroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs Decrease the Quality of Pleurodesis After Mechanical Pleural Abrasion/Pleurectomy for Treatment of Pneumothorax?

Phase1; Phase2 Interventional Ain Shams University · NCT06467318

What this trial studies

This study investigates whether non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) can improve the quality of pleurodesis following mechanical pleural abrasion or pleurectomy in patients with primary or secondary spontaneous pneumothorax. The primary outcome is the recurrence of pneumothorax within six months, assessed through X-rays and symptom evaluation. Secondary outcomes include the length of hospital stay, time to chest tube removal, and opioid usage. The study aims to clarify the role of NSAIDs in managing inflammation and fibrosis during the healing process after pleurodesis.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates include individuals of all ages diagnosed with primary or secondary spontaneous pneumothorax who are undergoing pleurodesis.

Not a fit: Patients with contraindications to NSAIDs, such as those with bleeding tendencies, chronic kidney disease, or allergies to NSAIDs, may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved outcomes and reduced recurrence rates for patients undergoing pleurodesis for pneumothorax.

How similar studies have performed: While the use of NSAIDs in various surgical contexts has been explored, this specific application in pleurodesis is relatively novel and has not been extensively tested.
