Evaluating the anatomy of thumb tendons in osteoarthritis

Anatomical Evaluation of the APL and FCR Tendons in Thumb CMC Joint in Relation to Osteophytes Formation of the Trapezium and Osteoarthritis.

Observational Fundació Institut de Recerca de l'Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau · NCT05626192

This study looks at the thumb tendons in older adults with osteoarthritis to see how their structure and nerve connections might affect joint stability and the development of bone growths.

What this trial studies

This observational study aims to analyze the anatomical features and sensory innervation of the accessory abductor pollicis longus (APL) tendons in the thumb carpometacarpal (CMC) joint, particularly in relation to thumb osteoarthritis. Using immunohistochemical methods, the study will investigate the presence of mechanoreceptors and sensory corpuscles that may contribute to joint stability. The research focuses on adults aged 50 to 90 years, examining how tendon insertions and ligaments affect the development of osteophytes and osteoarthritis in the thumb CMC joint.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are adults aged 50 to 90 years with thumb osteoarthritis.

Not a fit: Patients younger than 50 or older than 90 years may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could enhance understanding of thumb osteoarthritis and lead to improved treatment strategies.

How similar studies have performed: While similar studies have explored sensory innervation in other joints, this specific investigation into the thumb CMC joint is novel.
