Evaluating tests for detecting tuberculosis in kidney disease patients
Evaluation of Interferon-gamma Release Assays, Symptom Screening and Chest Radiograph for Detection of Subclinical Tuberculosis of End-stage Kidney Disease and Kidney Transplant Recipients in Thailand
This study is testing how well certain tests can find tuberculosis in patients with severe kidney disease to help catch it early and manage it better.

What this trial studies
This observational study involves approximately 160 patients with end-stage renal disease (ESKD) who are undergoing renal replacement therapy or have received kidney transplants. The researchers aim to assess the relationship between positive interferon gamma release assays (IGRA), symptom development, sputum tests, and chest radiographs to identify latent tuberculosis infection and subclinical TB in this vulnerable population. By understanding these associations, the study seeks to improve early detection and management of tuberculosis in ESKD patients.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are adults aged 18 and older with end-stage renal disease on dialysis or post-kidney transplantation.
Not a fit: Patients with a history of positive PPD tests or those currently suffering from active tuberculosis may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved early detection and treatment of tuberculosis in patients with end-stage kidney disease.
How similar studies have performed: While there have been studies on tuberculosis detection in various populations, this specific approach focusing on ESKD patients is relatively novel.
