Evaluating storage buffers for gut microbiome samples
PRObing The Efficacy of Commercial Stage Storage Buffers and Evaluating Gut Metaproteome Variability Between Individuals

What this trial studies
This study assesses the effectiveness of various commercial storage buffers for preserving human gut fecal samples over time. It compares these buffers to directly frozen samples using metaproteomic analysis to ensure reliable sample preservation. By collecting fecal samples periodically from volunteers, the study aims to explore inter- and intra-individual variabilities at the proteome level, addressing a critical gap in metaproteomic research. The findings could lead to standardized protocols that enhance reproducibility and comparability in gut microbiome studies.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are healthy adults aged 18-70 who are willing to provide informed consent.
Not a fit: Patients who have taken antibiotics in the past month or have undergone gastrointestinal surgery may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could improve the reliability of gut microbiome research, leading to better understanding and treatment of related health conditions.
How similar studies have performed: While the approach of evaluating storage buffers is not widely tested, the importance of sample preservation in metaproteomics is well recognized in the field.
