Evaluating salivary gland function in Sjögren's syndrome using imaging

Functional Analysis and Antigen Presentation in Striated Ductal Cells of Salivary Glands and Correlation With Sialoscintigraphy in Patients and Animal Models of Sjogren's Syndrome

NA · National Taiwan University Hospital · NCT06536075

What this trial studies

This study investigates the functional status of striated ductal cells in patients with Sjögren's syndrome through a non-invasive imaging technique called sialoscintigraphy. The researchers hypothesize that the sodium iodide symporter (NIS), which is predominantly expressed in these cells, can be assessed using technetium-99m radiotracer to evaluate gland function. By correlating NIS expression levels with clinical manifestations, the study aims to enhance understanding of the disease's mechanisms and improve diagnostic methods. The study will include patients with and without sicca symptoms who are already receiving sialoscintigraphy.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are individuals diagnosed with Sjögren's syndrome, particularly those undergoing sialoscintigraphy.

Not a fit: Patients who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have active cancer treatment may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved diagnostic tools for Sjögren's syndrome, allowing for better management of the condition.

How similar studies have performed: While the approach of using sialoscintigraphy in this context is novel, similar imaging techniques have shown promise in other autoimmune conditions.
