What this trial studies
This observational study aims to assess the respiratory muscle strength and physical capacity of symptomatic adult smokers at Muğla Training and Research Hospital. Participants will be categorized into groups based on their COPD status, including COPD, PRISm, and Pre-COPD. The primary outcome will focus on the proportion of individuals with Maximum Inspiratory Pressure (MIP) below 80%, while secondary outcomes will include the 6-Minute Walk Test (6MWT) distance and other respiratory metrics. Data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics and regression models to understand the effects of smoking on respiratory health.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are adult smokers with a history of at least 5 packages of cigarettes and who have undergone pulmonary function tests.
Not a fit: Patients with chronic respiratory diseases other than COPD, recent respiratory infections, or neuromuscular diseases may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could provide insights into the respiratory health of smokers, potentially leading to improved management strategies for COPD and related conditions.
How similar studies have performed: While similar studies have explored respiratory health in smokers, this specific approach focusing on muscle strength and exercise capacity in a pre-COPD population is relatively novel.
