What this trial studies
This clinical trial aims to assess the effectiveness of non-antibiotic supplemental interventions, specifically probiotics and zinc, in improving recovery rates among pediatric patients diagnosed with ventriculitis. Conducted at Ain Shams University Hospitals, the study involves a randomized, open-label design where participants will be divided into four groups, each receiving different combinations of standard care, probiotics, and zinc over a 14-day period. The goal is to determine if these supplements can enhance the immune response and clinical outcomes when used alongside antibiotics.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates include pediatric patients admitted to the neurosurgery department with a diagnosis of ventriculitis.
Not a fit: Patients with comorbidities, allergies to zinc or probiotics, or those not diagnosed with ventriculitis may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could provide a novel approach to improving recovery rates in pediatric patients with ventriculitis.
How similar studies have performed: While the use of probiotics and zinc in pediatric care is explored, this specific combination for ventriculitis is relatively novel and has not been extensively tested in prior studies.
