Evaluating microcirculation using photoplethysmography in healthy and ventilated patients
Evaluation of Microcirculation With Photoplethysmography (Pulse Oximetry) in Healthy Volunteers and Ventilated Patients
This study is testing a new way to measure blood flow in healthy people and critically ill patients to see how it works compared to standard methods.

What this trial studies
This observational study aims to assess microcirculation in both healthy volunteers and critically ill patients using photoplethysmography (PPG). It will compare PPG measurements with standard methods such as capillary refill time and perfusion index to understand microcirculation dynamics in different physiological conditions. The study will explore the relationship between the AC and DC components of PPG and their correlation with various dynamic tests. The goal is to enhance understanding of microcirculation in operating room and critical care settings.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates include healthy adults over 18 years and critically ill patients on mechanical ventilation in the ICU.
Not a fit: Patients with known peripheral vascular disease or those with trauma or burns on both upper limbs may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could improve the assessment of microcirculation in critically ill patients, leading to better monitoring and treatment strategies.
How similar studies have performed: While the approach of using PPG for microcirculation assessment is established, this specific comparison with standard methods in critically ill patients is relatively novel.
