Evaluating lung ultrasound for early detection of ARDS in chest trauma patients

Accuracy, Senstivity and Specificity of Lung Ultrasound in Comparison to CT Chest for Early Detection of ARDS and Pneumonia in Patients With Chest Trauma

Observational Ain Shams University · NCT06078254

What this trial studies

This observational study aims to assess the accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity of lung ultrasound in the early detection of Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) and pneumonia in patients with chest trauma, comparing its effectiveness to that of CT scans. The study will also investigate pulmonary complications and their correlation with the development of ARDS and pneumonia. Given the limitations of traditional imaging methods like chest X-rays and CT scans, particularly in unstable patients, lung ultrasound may offer a safer and more accessible alternative for critical care settings.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are adult ICU patients admitted with chest trauma.

Not a fit: Patients under 18 years old, those with pre-existing lung diseases, or pregnant women may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved early detection of ARDS and pneumonia in chest trauma patients, potentially reducing morbidity and mortality.

How similar studies have performed: While the use of lung ultrasound in trauma settings is gaining traction, this specific approach to early detection of ARDS in chest trauma patients is relatively novel and has not been extensively tested.
