What this trial studies

This observational study investigates the effectiveness of LEVETIRACETAM compared to PHENYTOIN in managing status epilepticus in children aged 3 months to 17 years. The research aims to determine if LEVETIRACETAM is non-inferior to PHENYTOIN in stopping seizures and preventing recurrence, while also assessing the clinical tolerance of the medication. The study includes patients who have experienced a seizure lasting more than 5 minutes and have not responded to benzodiazepines. Data will be collected from participating centers in Strasbourg, France, from November 2019 to May 2023.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are children aged 3 months to 17 years who require second-line treatment for status epilepticus after benzodiazepine failure.

Not a fit: Patients or parents who oppose the reuse of their data for research purposes will not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could provide a safer and more effective treatment option for children experiencing status epilepticus.

How similar studies have performed: While the approach of comparing LEVETIRACETAM to PHENYTOIN is not widely tested, existing studies suggest potential benefits of LEVETIRACETAM in similar contexts.
