Evaluating kidney damage from immunotherapy in cancer patients

Role of Renal Biopsy in the Suspicion of Nephrotoxicity of Immunotherapy (Checkpoint Inhibitors) in Solid Cancer

What this trial studies

This observational study investigates the role of renal biopsy in patients with solid cancers who are treated with checkpoint inhibitors and experience acute renal failure. The goal is to establish a probability score for identifying histological lesions associated with nephrotoxicity, which can help guide nephrologists and oncologists in managing acute kidney injury (AKI) related to immunotherapy. By assessing the necessity of renal biopsy, the study aims to minimize unnecessary risks associated with the procedure while optimizing patient care.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are adults over 18 years old with solid cancers treated by checkpoint inhibitors who have experienced renal failure.

Not a fit: Patients who do not have renal failure or are not receiving immunotherapy are unlikely to benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could improve the management of kidney-related side effects in cancer patients receiving immunotherapy.

How similar studies have performed: While the approach of assessing nephrotoxicity in immunotherapy is gaining attention, this specific methodology of using renal biopsy probability scores is relatively novel.
