What this trial studies
This observational study aims to assess the prevalence of intestinal parasitic infections in patients diagnosed with various forms of intestinal cancer, such as colorectal cancer and gastrointestinal stromal tumors, compared to non-cancer individuals. The research will involve stool examinations to identify the presence of opportunistic protozoa like Blastocystis hominis and Cryptosporidium spp., which may complicate cancer treatment. By understanding the relationship between these infections and cancer, the study seeks to shed light on potential risks and outcomes for affected patients.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are individuals diagnosed with intestinal cancer, including colorectal cancer and intestinal lymphoma.
Not a fit: Patients who have taken antibiotics within the last four weeks or anti-parasitic drugs within the last two weeks may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved management strategies for intestinal cancer patients by addressing co-infections that may hinder treatment.
How similar studies have performed: While the specific approach of this study may be novel, previous research has indicated a significant relationship between parasitic infections and cancer outcomes, suggesting potential for meaningful insights.
