Evaluating if global strain and mechanical dispersion can better predict death and arrhythmias than ejection fraction in heart failure patients

Improved Prediction of Clinical Outcome With the Use of Global Strain and Mechanical Dispersion in Patients With Myocardial Infarction and Heart Failure

Observational Oslo University Hospital · NCT02286908

What this trial studies

This observational study aims to determine whether global strain and mechanical dispersion measurements can more accurately predict mortality and ventricular arrhythmias compared to traditional left ventricular ejection fraction in patients with myocardial infarction and heart failure. The study will involve patients who are planned for primary prophylactic internal cardioverter defibrillator implantation and will utilize transthoracic echocardiography for data collection. Participants will be followed for a period of 3 to 5 years to assess outcomes related to heart function and arrhythmias.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates include adults over 18 years old with a history of myocardial infarction and heart failure who are planned for an internal cardioverter defibrillator.

Not a fit: Patients without myocardial infarction or heart failure symptoms, or those not planned for an internal cardioverter defibrillator, may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved risk stratification and management of patients with heart failure, potentially reducing mortality and arrhythmia rates.

How similar studies have performed: Other studies have explored similar predictive measures, but this specific approach focusing on global strain and mechanical dispersion in this patient population is relatively novel.
