Evaluating familial cases of blood cancers in patients with myeloid neoplasms

A Retrospective and Prospective Multicentre Observational Study for the Evaluation of Incidence of Familial AML/MDSs in Patients With Myeloid Neoplasms (AML/MDS)

Observational Gruppo Italiano Malattie EMatologiche dell'Adulto · NCT04460950

What this trial studies

This observational study aims to evaluate the incidence of familial Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) and Myelodysplastic Syndromes (MDS) in patients diagnosed with these conditions between January 2014 and December 2022. It will collect clinical information from multiple centers, focusing on patients who have at least one relative affected by hematologic neoplasms or other cancers diagnosed at a young age. The study will follow participants until December 2023 to gather comprehensive data on familial patterns of these diseases. No interventions will be administered, as the study is purely observational.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates include adults over 18 years old diagnosed with AML or MDS who have a family history of hematologic malignancies or solid tumors diagnosed before age 40.

Not a fit: Patients without a family history of myeloid neoplasms or related cancers may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could enhance understanding of the genetic factors contributing to familial AML and MDS, potentially leading to improved screening and prevention strategies.

How similar studies have performed: While this approach is observational, similar studies have successfully identified familial patterns in other cancers, suggesting potential for valuable insights in this context.
