What this trial studies

This observational study aims to evaluate the various clinical and etiological patterns of epileptic syndromes in infants and early childhood. It focuses on understanding the incidence and characteristics of epilepsy that begins before the age of two, which is often symptomatic and associated with poor long-term outcomes. The study will analyze cases based on recent genetic discoveries and traditional electroclinical features to provide a comprehensive overview of these syndromes. By examining a population-based cohort, the study seeks to fill gaps in knowledge regarding the prevalence and nature of epilepsy in resource-limited settings.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are infants and children aged 1 to 36 months diagnosed with an epileptic syndrome according to the International League Against Epilepsy criteria.

Not a fit: Patients with epilepsy diagnosed before 1 month or after 36 months, or those with conditions that mimic epilepsy, will not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved understanding and management of epileptic syndromes in young children, potentially enhancing treatment outcomes.

How similar studies have performed: While this study builds on previous work regarding epilepsy in infants, it aims to provide a broader perspective that has not been extensively explored in resource-limited settings.
