Evaluating balance changes after hip surgery for osteoarthritis
Changes in Postural Stability and Balance Confidence in People After Elective Unilateral Total Hip Arthroplasty for Osteoarthritis: A Prospective Cohort Study
This study is testing how two different types of hip surgery for osteoarthritis affect balance and confidence in people over 60 during the first three months after the operation.

What this trial studies
This observational study investigates the effects of total hip arthroplasty (THA) on postural stability and balance confidence in individuals over 60 years old suffering from osteoarthritis. It aims to assess changes in balance and quality of life during the first three months post-surgery, comparing two surgical approaches: direct anterior (DA) and direct lateral (DL). The study will utilize both clinical and instrumented measures to evaluate outcomes, including activity levels and pain. Participants will be monitored for improvements in their physical and psychological well-being following the procedure.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are individuals aged 60 and older who are scheduled for elective unilateral total hip arthroplasty due to osteoarthritis.
Not a fit: Patients undergoing bilateral THA or those with conditions preventing study completion may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this study could enhance understanding of post-surgical balance issues, leading to improved rehabilitation strategies for patients undergoing hip surgery.
How similar studies have performed: Previous studies have shown varying success in addressing postural stability after hip surgeries, but this specific focus on balance confidence and surgical approach comparison is relatively novel.
