Evaluating a computer model for estimating dental age from X-rays

Assessing the Precision of Convolutional Neural Networks for Dental Age Estimation in an Egyptian Population From Digital Panoramic Radiographs: A Diagnostic Accuracy Study

Cairo University · NCT05901857

This study is testing a computer program that uses X-ray images to see if it can accurately estimate dental age compared to traditional methods and the person's actual age.

What this trial studies

This observational study aims to assess the accuracy of a convolutional neural network (CNN) in estimating dental age from digital panoramic radiographs. Participants will have their panoramic radiographs taken, and their chronological age will be calculated as a reference standard. The study will utilize the Willems method for dental age estimation, which involves scoring the development of seven specific teeth. The accuracy of the CNN model will be compared to the traditional dental radiologist's estimations and the established chronological age.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates are individuals with all mandibular left permanent teeth visible and no systemic diseases or dental anomalies.

Not a fit: Patients with congenital anomalies, facial asymmetry, or a history of trauma in the dentofacial region may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could improve the precision of dental age estimation, which is crucial for various clinical and legal applications.

How similar studies have performed: While the use of CNNs in medical imaging is gaining traction, this specific application for dental age estimation is relatively novel and has not been extensively tested.
