Evaluating a cancer admission score for emergency department patients

The Internal Prospective validatiON of a prediCtiOn Model for the Change of admIssion for Patient With caNcer Admitted to the emerGency Department (ONCOMING Study)

Observational Erasmus Medical Center · NCT06558487

This study is testing a new scoring system to see if it can help doctors better predict what will happen to cancer patients who come to the emergency room, while also trying out a way to speed up their care if they score high.

What this trial studies

This observational study aims to assess the accuracy of the Cancer Admission Score (CAS) in predicting the disposition of patients with active cancer who visit the emergency department. It involves calculating the CAS after triage and after initial blood results, comparing predicted outcomes with actual patient dispositions. Additionally, an early bed reservation intervention will be tested for patients with a high CAS score to improve care efficiency. The study will also track metrics such as length of stay and time-to-disposition.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates include adults with solid or hematological malignancies who are currently receiving or have recently received systemic therapy and are presenting to the emergency department.

Not a fit: Patients under 18 years old or those who have only undergone surgical treatment for cancer may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could enhance emergency care for cancer patients by improving the accuracy of admission predictions and optimizing resource allocation.

How similar studies have performed: While the CAS model is being evaluated in this context, similar predictive models in emergency care have shown promise, suggesting potential for success.
