Ethnic differences in S100B blood levels among healthy adults in Guadeloupe
Ethnic Specificities of S100B Protein Blood Level in Guadeloupe: Cross-sectional Study in Healthy Subjects
This project will test whether normal S100B protein blood levels differ by skin phenotype in healthy adults living and working in Guadeloupe.

What this trial studies
This cross-sectional study will measure S100B protein concentrations in blood samples from healthy adult hospital staff in Guadeloupe and record self-identified ethnic origin and skin phototype. Participants aged 18–65 without neurological disease, melanoma history, or anticoagulant use will be enrolled and sampled at local hospital sites. The study will compare baseline S100B distributions across phenotype groups to see if the commonly used 0.1 μg/L threshold is appropriate locally. Results aim to clarify physiological variability that could affect use of S100B to guide head CT decisions after minor head injury.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Healthy adults 18–65 who work at the University Hospital of Guadeloupe or the Hospital of Basse‑Terre, can state their ethnic origin and skin phototype, have social security coverage, and give written informed consent.
Not a fit: People with neurological disease, a personal history of melanoma, on anticoagulant therapy, under legal protection, outside the age range, or not local hospital staff are unlikely to benefit from participation.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, the findings could support ethnicity‑ or skin‑phototype‑adjusted S100B thresholds that reduce unnecessary head CT scans in Guadeloupe while maintaining patient safety.
How similar studies have performed: S100B has been guideline‑endorsed to reduce CT use in minor TBI and a small prior study reported higher baseline S100B in individuals of Black phenotype, but larger confirmatory studies are lacking.
