What this trial studies

ENSAND 2.0 (2024–2026) works with smallholder farmers in northern Nigeria to increase vegetable production and to promote greater consumption among farmers and nearby households. The program combines agricultural production support with demand-generation activities aimed at households. The evaluation uses a quasi-experimental design comparing participating farmer households and neighbor households in intervention local government areas with appropriate comparison groups, and is guided by the RE-AIM (reach, effectiveness, adoption, implementation, maintenance) framework. Primary outcomes are household quantity and diversity of vegetables consumed.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal participants are adults (≥18) in smallholder farmer households enrolled in ENSAND or neighbor households recruited by those farmers, located in intervention LGAs and able to consent in English or Hausa.

Not a fit: Households outside the designated intervention local government areas, individuals under 18, or those not connected to participating farmers are unlikely to receive benefit from this program.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, the program could increase household vegetable intake and diversity, improving dietary quality and downstream health outcomes.

How similar studies have performed: Similar combined agricultural-production and demand-generation programs have shown mixed but sometimes positive increases in household vegetable consumption in low-resource settings.
