What this trial studies

The Pediatric Oncology Recovery Trial After Surgery (PORTS) is a multicenter observational study that evaluates the implementation of an Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocol in pediatric patients undergoing abdominal or retroperitoneal surgical resections for pelvic cancer. The study involves two groups: historical patients and those treated under the ERAS protocol, with a total enrollment of 288 patients. It aims to assess various outcomes, including complications, adherence to the protocol, length of hospital stay, and patient-reported outcomes, over a 90-day period post-surgery. The findings will contribute to refining the ERAS protocol for better recovery in pediatric oncology patients.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates include pediatric patients aged 1 month or older undergoing specific surgical procedures for pelvic cancer at participating hospitals.

Not a fit: Patients younger than 1 month of age will not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved recovery outcomes and reduced complications for pediatric patients undergoing cancer surgery.

How similar studies have performed: Similar studies implementing ERAS protocols in adult populations have shown success, suggesting potential benefits in pediatric settings as well.
