What this trial studies

The study recruits women who recently completed routine screening mammography at the University of Utah, with participants grouped by BI-RADS category based on their imaging results. After baseline surveys that collect demographics and preferred contact method, participants are randomized 1:1 to usual care or usual care plus a chatbot delivered via phone, tablet, or web. The chatbot provides tailored, scripted educational and motivational messages to support understanding of results and recommended follow-up, in English or Spanish. The study also randomly invites participants from four defined groups for focus group discussions to gather qualitative feedback on the tool and its acceptability.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Adult women (age 18 or older) who speak English or Spanish and recently had a routine screening mammogram at the University of Utah, and who are not currently receiving breast cancer treatment, are ideal candidates.

Not a fit: Men, patients currently in breast cancer treatment, people who do not speak English or Spanish, or those with cognitive limitations that prevent informed consent are unlikely to benefit from this intervention.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, the chatbot could improve patients' understanding of mammogram results and increase adherence to recommended follow-up, particularly for rural and Latina women.

How similar studies have performed: Chatbots have shown promise in some health education and behavior-change contexts, but using them specifically within mobile mammography programs to improve follow-up is relatively untested.
